Between the grim “Pageant” that opens the poem and the rousing political oration with which it closes—and, spatially, between the “prostrate multitude” and the allegorical “Destructions” they have so far failed to recognize—there intervenes an extravagantly poetic figure (lines 151, 126). Shelley ultimately calls this figure, as he so often does, simply “a Shape.” Built up gradually over nearly fifty lines, this vague and misty trope disrupts the allegorical clarity and celerity, that swift and tidy pairing of abstract Vices and proper names, that has supported readers until now:
